Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
